Five months, sixty pilgrims, and every guide in the Old World

In June of 1867 I paid twelve hundred and fifty dollars to be taken to Europe and the Holy Land with a shipload of respectable people. They prayed, I played dominoes, and we were all of us cheated in eleven languages. These are my letters home, put back together.

Where I ate, drank and gaped, with stars

I am told that readers nowadays like to know where a traveller ate, and how much he liked it, in stars. I approve of the system. A star is short, it cannot be misquoted, and it saves a man from having to write the soup was adequate forty times. So here is the Old World, as far as I sampled it, rated by a man from Missouri who has eaten off a tin plate on a steamboat and been grateful.

I give no stars to the ship's table on the Quaker City, out of respect for the cook, who was doing his best with a great many beans.

There. Thirty-five stars handed out between Paris and Cairo, and not one of them bought. I mention it because I am told that in some countries now the stars can be had for money, and I want it on record that mine cost me a great deal more than that.
